ESB Independent Energy celebrates responsible leadership
On Thursday 10th June, Business in the Community (BITC), Northern Ireland held its fifth annual Regional Recognition Gala Awards Dinner at The Waterfront Hall in Belfast. Celebrating the power of responsible leadership, the awards focus on how business conducts itself – in the workplace, the environment, the economy and the community. Hugely successful, the event acknowledges Northern Ireland companies that demonstrate excellence in Corporate and Social Responsibility and saw firms battle it out for the coveted title of Northern Ireland’s Responsible Company of the Year and other categories.
In what is the first of a three year commitment, the events core sponsor was ESB Independent Energy (ESBIE). With entries up 20% on last year and over 490 people attending, the audience waited with anticipation as the various category winners were announced. The night was one of celebration and the top prize, Northern Ireland Responsible Company of the Year, went to Diageo Northern Ireland, a worthy winner.
ESB Chief Executive Padraig McManus was on hand to present the awards and addressing the large gathering spoke of how he first became aware of BITC and subsequently got involved. He spoke of his high regard for BITC and their achievements in driving CSR as a corner stone to successful business. “Tonight’s event is a highly appropriate way for ESB to mark a decade of successful business involvement in Northern Ireland”, he commented.
He then had the honour of introducing President of Ireland, President Mary McAleese who delivered a most compelling keynote address. The President spoke of the need for greater social inclusion and the need to protect the less well off in our neighbourhoods and include those, who, for whatever reason feel that they are excluded and on the outside of our society.
The Regional Recognition Awards are now established as an integral part of the Northern Ireland business calendar, and companies – whether the overall winner, a category winner, or a shortlisted company – deserve hearty congratulations for showing responsible leadership and for acting as a force for good in our society. Well done to everyone.
