ESBIE Delivering Tidal power to DHL

DHL Supply Chain in Northern Ireland is riding the crest of an energy wave after agreeing a contract with ESB Independent Energy (ESBIE) to be provided with tidal power produced by the 1.2 MW SeaGen turbine.

As a leading global logistics business, DHL Supply Chain is working to minimise their impact on the environment. The company is committed to improving operational efficiencies to enhance and protect the environment and have set goals to achieve a carbon dioxide (CO2) efficiency improvement of 10% by 2012 and 30% by 2020.

ESBIE will provide DHL Supply Chain in Northern Ireland with tidal energy produced through its partnership with Marine Current Turbines (MCT), who operate the SeaGen turbine facility. Following substantial investment in the company as part of its ongoing commitment to development of renewable energy technologies, ESBIE signed an agreement to purchase all the electricity output from the SeaGen tidal facility. To date this has produced over 200 Mega Watt Hours of electricity forming a significant element of ESBIE’s green energy offering to customers.

The 1.2 MW turbine deployed in Strangford is currently the only existing example in the world of tidal turbine technology of a scale and performance capable of producing tidal energy on a commercial scale.

“Tidal energy is not the only area in which we are developing renewable energy sources; we recently announced plans to buy a 20 MW, 8 turbine windfarm in Co. Tyrone, with a further three wind farms coming on stream by the middle of 2010.”
